ANCIIENTS Celebrating 10-Year Anniversary | Season of Mist

At long last, ANCIIENTS are returning.

Since winning a coveted JUNO for their last album in 2018, the hard-rocking Canucks have been whittling away at their heavily-anticipated follow-up. That album is done now, but before they come down from the mountain with a new set of genre-breaking commandments for the psychedelic masses, the band are turning back to reflect on the genesis of their stoned and sludgy roots.

Next month, Anciients are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their debut album with three shows in British Columbia. Metalheads aren’t exactly known for being an agreeable bunch, but ‘Heart of Oak’ is still widely considered a modern-day classic by every sub, regardless of whether you prefer eyeliner or corpse paint. “Oak is as solid as its arboreal namesake”, wrote Metal Hammer, while Pitchfork called the album “immediate and electrifying”, an early indicator that Anciients are “bound for big stages”.

Don’t miss the chance to hear “Overthrone”, “Falling in Line” and the always sizzling “Raise the Sun”. Anciients will play Victoria and Cumberland leading up to their official birthday bash on December 8 at Vancouver’s Rickshaw Theatre. Kenny Cook (vocals, guitar) and Mike Hannay (drums) are now joined by Brock MacInnes on second guitar and bassist Rory O’Brien. But it only felt right to have original guitarist Chris Dyck and bassist Aaron “Boon” Gustafson join them on the stage for one last hoorah in Vancouver. Crashing the party are the band’s friends in Worse (featuring members of 3 Inches of Blood, Pride Tiger), Bloodrhine (members of Bison, Black Wizard), 1982, Scalding and doomed stoners Dead Quiet.

“We are excited to be celebrating a decade of Heart of Oak in Vancouver with some of our closest friends”, says Cook. “We were recording a new record at the time of the actual anniversary date earlier this year. So we’ve decided now would be a great time to celebrate while 2023 is still upon us. We appreciate all of the support over the last 10 years and looking forward to sharing a new record with you all in 2024”.
