It’s been ten days and I can’t find a thing written in english about what happened in the “God Is An Astronaut (GIAA) + Head On” live at Fuzz Club, Athens (GR). The live that Head On opened, the live that Torsten Kinsella violently interrupted them and pushed away their singer from the scene. The live that went on normally with everyone forgetting what they had just witnessed, and that ten days later, is still being discussed.

I delayed writing something to gather as much information as I could. To read as many live reports from various websites, to ask friends who were there that night, I read Head On‘s announcement of the incident. I searched before I started this text to see if there was any statement from GIAA. Nothing. Not only this, but also the official Facebook page of the band has disappeared. Oh, boy.
There are specific reasons I wanted to write some thoughts on the matter, even though I wasn’t there that night. Therefore, I am not going to try and describe what happened.

So, the most important thing is my concern about those who voted for or even justified the offensive behavior of the co-founder of God Is An Astronaut to the Head On singer, Christos. The way some reporters or even a part of the audience commented on the physical attack, giving him reasons and excuses because “maybe this, maybe that“. Like it matters.
Well, no.
It doesn’t.
When a hand is raised and is threatening someone, there are no “buts” or excuses. It would be reprehensible (and should be condemnable) even if he didn’t get physical. Can we imagine how this would have escalated if Christos simply defended himself towards the attack he received?

Another reason is that I was so shocked by Kinsella’s actions, even more when I started to realize that it may never be heard beyond Greece’s borders. What he did, what he said, and how they are trying to make it go away without saying anything. I do believe that GIAA is one of the top bands in the post rock scene worldwide. They have composed wonderful music, and this cannot be taken by anyone. But all this does not give them the right to walk on the less known bands, mistreating them with words or actions. Their music and their fame do not give them the right to have the infallible.

Just to be said, the fact that one of the bands I (used to) respect that much is staying  so. deafeningly. silent. about what happened that night, is the most disappointing thing as the days pass. No statements anywhere, a deleted post that was saved in a screenshot which reminded them that the whole incident was caught on video, and their official Facebook page closed. They do not support Kinsella anywhere (how could they anyways). They did not apologize anywhere – did they even understand what happened? and if so, they just don’t care?

Whatever (and IF it) happened with GIAA‘s equipment and Head On, storming on the stage and doing what he (Kinsella) did was not the solution. There were other ways to deal with it, to ask them (Head On) to pay attention, to address them humanely and with respect. Not because there was an audience there, not to be a “good example“. Only because that was the right thing to do. Because that night, both bands were a team and they could share something beautiful.

Violence and aggression must be condemned wherever it comes from. From a friend, an idol, an inspirer. What is truly courageous to do, is to apologize when something bad happens. Whoever you are, step upfront, admit you acted like shit and say you are sorry. Don’t be the guy that bullies someone who does not have your reputation / strength, only because you are in a band that people love.

Δέκα μέρες μετά και δεν βρίσκω τίποτα και πουθενά γραμμένο στα αγγλικά για ό,τι συνέβη στο live των God Is An Astronaut (GIAA) στο Fuzz. Το live που άνοιξαν οι Head On, το live που ο Torsten Kinsella με βίαιο τρόπο τους διέκοψε και τους έδιωξε κακήν κακώς απ’τη σκηνή. Το live που συνεχίστηκε κανονικά και που δέκα μέρες μετά, συζητιέται ακόμη.

Καθυστέρησα να γράψω κάτι προκειμένου να μαζέψω όσες περισσότερες πληροφορίες μπορώ. Να ανέβουν οι ανταποκρίσεις στα διάφορα sites, ρώτησα φίλους που ήταν εκεί εκείνο το βράδυ, διάβασα την ανακοίνωση των Head On για το συμβάν. Έψαξα πριν ξεκινήσω αυτό το κείμενο να δω αν υπάρχει και κάποια δήλωση από τους GIAA. Τίποτα. Κι όχι μόνο αυτό, κλειστή και η επίσημη σελίδα της μπάντας στο Facebook. Oh, boy.

Υπάρχουν συγκεκριμένοι λόγοι που ήθελα να γράψω για αυτό κι ας μην ήμουν εκεί**. Ο πιο βασικός είναι η ανησυχία που μου προκάλεσαν όσοι εκλογίκευσαν και δικαιολόγησαν την επίθεση του συνιδρυτή των GIAA προς τον τραγουδιστή των Head On, Χρήστο. Το πως επειδή “ό,τι“, δίπλα απ’το ότι του επιτέθηκε, έβαλαν και μια αιτιολόγηση. Λες και έχει σημασία.
Όχι, δεν έχει.
Καμία.
Όταν σηκώνεται χέρι προς κάποια κατεύθυνση, δεν έχει “αλλά”. Θα ήταν κατακριτέο (και θα έπρεπε και καταδικαστέο) ακόμα κι αν δεν γινόταν κάποια σωματική κίνηση. Μπορούμε άραγε να φανταστούμε πώς θα είχε κλιμακωθεί όλο αυτό αν ο Χρήστος απλά υπερασπιζόταν τον εαυτό του στην επίθεση που δέχθηκε;

Ένας άλλος λόγος είναι πως σοκαρίστηκα τόσο από αυτά που διάβασα, που η ιδέα να μη μαθευτεί κάτι εκτός συνόρων, με ενοχλεί. Με εκνευρίζει, πώς το λένε. Οι GIAA είναι από τις μπάντες που σκίζουν στη post rock σκηνή, χωρίς σύνορα. Έχουν γράψει κομματάρες και αυτό δεν τους το παίρνει κανείς. Όλα αυτά όμως δεν τους δίνουν το δικαίωμα να πατάνε πάνω στις μικρότερου βεληνεκούς μπάντες. Δεν τους δίνουν το δικαίωμα να έχουν το αλάθητο και, διάολε, να μη λογοδοτούν πουθενά.

Και, για να ειπωθεί κι αυτό, το να βλέπω μια από τις πολύ ιδιαίτερες μπάντες για μένα να μένει τόσο εκκωφαντικά σιωπηλή για όσα έγιναν, είναι αυτό που με απογοητεύει όλο και περισσότερο όσο περνάνε οι μέρες. Καμία δήλωση πουθενά, ένα σβησμένο ποστ τους που σώθηκε σε ένα screenshot όπου τους υπενθυμιζόταν ότι όλο το συμβάν υπάρχει σε βίντεο, η απόλυτη σιγή παντού για ό,τι έγινε, η επίσημη σελίδα τους απενεργοποιημένη. Δεν υποστηρίζουν πουθενά τον Kinsella (πώς θα μπορούσαν άλλωστε). Δεν απολογούνται πουθενά – κατάλαβαν τι έγινε; κι αν ναι, τότε απλά δεν τους νοιάζει;

Οτιδήποτε και να έγινε (ΑΝ έγινε) με τον εξοπλισμό τους και τους Head On, το να φερθούν έτσι δεν ήταν η λύση. Υπήρχαν άλλοι πόσοι τρόποι να το αντιμετωπίσουν, να τους ζητήσουν να προσέχουν, να τους απευθυνθούν ανθρώπινα και με σεβασμό. Όχι επειδή ήταν κόσμος από κάτω, όχι για να είναι το “καλό παράδειγμα“. Επειδή έτσι έπρεπε, επειδή για εκείνο το βράδυ, ήταν συνάδελφοι και θα μπορούσαν να μοιραστούν κάτι όμορφο.

Η βία και το νταηλίκι πρέπει να καταδικάζεται από όπου και να προέρχεται. Κι ας είναι και φίλος, και ας είναι και ίνδαλμα, και ας είναι και εμπνευστής. Και αυτό που θέλει τόλμη και κουράγιο, είναι να απολογείσαι, και όχι πάνω στις πλάτες των φανς σου να ασκείς την όποια εξουσία (νομίζεις ότι) έχεις σε κάποιον που δεν έχει τη φήμη/δύναμή σου.
