For three decades, Tsjuder have never wavered in carrying the banner for true Norwegian black metal. But when their heretical drummer Anti-Christian bowed out ahead of their first album in eight years, founding members Nag and Draugluin needed a hellacious player to sit behind the throne.
Enter John Rice. Over the past 15 years, Rice has established himself as one of the most consistent and versatile drummers in extreme metal. Nicknamed “The Charn” after his screen name, the Richmond resident got his start with Arizona’s Job for a Cowboy during the early 2010s. He’s now an active member of Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats and the metalcore supergroup Umbra Vitae, though he still serves as the live drummer for Tsjuder while also filling in for fellow black metal fixtures 1349 and Behemoth.
Rice recently wrapped up several dates with The Red Chord, but he did find the time to film a new drum playthrough. All of his footwork on Tsjuder’s new album Helvegr is beastly, but the chilling cymbal crashes and unrelenting speed of the blast beats on “Iron Beast” hold hard and fast to the mighty Oslo band’s eternally uncompromising spirit.

More praise for Helvegr
“It’s another gnarly, kickass ride that reminds me that when I get on a Tsjuder kick, I can’t listen to black metal for a while. First, because it’s hard to find black metal I enjoy this much. And second, because my ears are bleeding” – Angry Metal Guy
“Helvegr is an utterly diabolical ride through the harsh, licking flames of Hell and one that’ll remind fans why Tsjuder are some of the titans of the genre” – New Noise
“You can’t make a better black metal album” – Metal Bite
“They are still an incredibly relevant and influential force that could still run circles around the majority of modern black metal acts with ease” – Distorted Sound
